On 7 April 2016, The Malaysian Lawyers, Marcus van Geyzel and Lee Shih, attended the Asian Legal Business Malaysia Law Awards 2017 held at Intercontinental Hotel. In its third year, these awards are the equivalent of the Oscars for the Malaysian legal sector, giving recognition to the work done by the lawyers from private practice and as in-house lawyers.

Marcus clinched the Rising Law Firm of the Year on behalf of Peter Ling van Geyzel, a prize awarded to a firm established between 2012 to 2014. Lee Shih’s firm, Skrine, also walked away with 5 awards including the Arbitration Law Firm of the Year and Aviation Law Firm of the Year.

The awards night saw more than 150 people in attendance and with around 30 awards being handed out. The winners were determined by a group of judges, including in-house individuals, academics, industry specialists and practitioners.

The ALB awards brought together a good mix of representatives from the entire legal industry. Representatives from the larger to smaller law firms, litigators, corporate lawyers, dealmakers, the banks, in-house teams, foreign lawyers and regulators. The diverse range of awards recognise the unique contribution by all of the stakeholders in the legal sectors. Hence, in addition to awards for practice areas and for specific deals, recognition was also given to categories such as Corporate Citizenship Law Firm of the Year, Boutique Law Firm of the Year (15 lawyers or less), and Malaysia In-House Team of the Year.
